The Cataloguer

We are independent cataloguers with 20 years' experience documenting collections for museums, heritage centres, art galleries, book-dealers and private collectors. We have extensive experience documenting objects in the fields of archaeology, social history, natural history, books, photographs, industrial history, fine art, archive documents, textiles and coins.

The cataloguing backlog is a problem for museums and collections nationwide. Professionally-specified documentation standards have risen while organisations' funding has, at best, stood still. It is also virtually impossible to find the necessary range of skills in one place: project management, object identification, high-quality data entry, database development and performance management. Without all these skills, the task of cataloguing a large collection is daunting. Locating and recruiting a team of individuals is costly, time-consuming with a degree of risk that you might not find what you need. That's where thecataloguer comes in; we give you access to the key elements of experience and knowledge needed to document a collection, all accessible through a single contact point.

Grant funding for large or small documentation projects is available from a range of sources. Applications are much more likely to succeed for projects where there is a proven method of achieving a high-quality finished catalogue.
